About the Eclectus Parrot

The Eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) is one of the most visually distinctive parrots in the world — and the reason for its notoriety is unusual: the male and female look so different that early ornithologists classified them as completely separate species. The male is brilliant emerald green with a candy-corn orange-and-yellow beak; the female is vivid red with a blue chest patch and a black beak. The sexual dimorphism is among the most extreme in the bird kingdom.

Beyond appearance, the Eclectus is a calm, intelligent, and deeply perceptive bird. It is generally less neurotic than cockatoos and less demanding than African Greys, making it an accessible species for experienced bird owners transitioning to a more sophisticated companion parrot.

Personality differences between sexes

Males tend to be more relaxed, sociable, and tolerant of handling. They are generally gentler and adapt more readily to multiple family members.
Females are often more assertive, territorial (especially during breeding season), and may be more challenging for less experienced handlers. They are also frequently described as more bonded to their primary companion.

Diet — a critical consideration

The Eclectus has a significantly longer digestive tract than most parrots and is uniquely sensitive to dietary additives, artificial colourings, and excessive fat. A diet inappropriate for the Eclectus can cause feather-destructive behaviour that is commonly misattributed to stress or boredom. Getting the diet right is the single most important factor in Eclectus health.

Diet and Nutrition

Eclectus parrots have unusually high requirements for fresh food and fibre:

Avoid: avocado, onion, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, and any pellets with artificial colours or preservatives. Eclectus are more sensitive to dietary errors than most parrot species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do male and female Eclectus look so different?

The Eclectus exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism — a phenomenon found across many species but most dramatic in this parrot. The two sexes evolved different colour strategies: females are red and blue to camouflage in the nest cavity; males are green to camouflage while foraging in the forest canopy.

Are Eclectus parrots good pets?

Yes — they are calm, intelligent, and affectionate. They are generally quieter than cockatoos or macaws and less emotionally intense. However, their dietary requirements are unique and must be met carefully to prevent feather-destructive behaviours.

Do Eclectus parrots talk?

Yes — they develop impressive vocabularies of 40–80 words and have a clear, melodic voice. Many owners note that Eclectus vocabulary is underrated compared to the more publicised African Grey.

Are male or female Eclectus better pets?

Males are typically calmer and more tolerant of handling. Females can be more assertive and territorial, particularly during seasonal hormonal cycles. For first-time Eclectus owners, a male is often recommended.

Do Eclectus parrots need CITES documentation?

Yes — they are listed on CITES Appendix II. We provide complete documentation with every bird.

How long do Eclectus parrots live?

40–60 years with proper care. A substantial long-term commitment.
