Macaws are the most spectacular companion birds in the world — and the most demanding. This guide covers everything a prospective macaw owner in the UK needs to know before making this extraordinary commitment.
At Paraíso de Aves, we work with five macaw species and one exceptional hybrid. Here is how they compare:
| Species | Size | Temperament | Noise | CITES | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyacinth Macaw | 100 cm / 1.5 kg | Very gentle | Very loud | Appendix I | 60–80 yrs |
| Green-wing Macaw | 90–95 cm / 1.3 kg | Gentle | Very loud | Appendix II | 60–80 yrs |
| Blue-and-Yellow Macaw | 86–94 cm / 1.1 kg | Sociable | Loud | Appendix II | 60–70 yrs |
| Catalina Macaw | 85–95 cm / 1.0 kg | Sociable | Moderate-loud | Appendix II | 50–60 yrs |
| Scarlet Macaw | 81–96 cm / 1.0 kg | Bold, spirited | Very loud | Appendix I | 50–75 yrs |
Space: The absolute minimum cage size for a large macaw is 120×90×160 cm. Many experienced macaw owners provide significantly larger — dedicated macaw rooms or substantial outdoor aviaries. The 100+ cm wingspan of the larger species requires genuine space to extend fully.
Noise: All large macaws are loud by domestic standards. Dawn and dusk calling periods are natural and cannot be eliminated. Soundproofing or dedicated bird rooms are used by many urban macaw owners. If you live in a flat or have sensitive neighbours, a macaw of any species may be impractical.
Destructive capacity: Macaw beaks generate 300–700 psi bite force. They will destroy soft wood furniture, electrical cables, books, and anything else within reach. Any macaw interaction space must be designed assuming the bird will attempt to chew everything in it.
Commitment: A Blue-and-Yellow or Green-wing Macaw may live to age 70. Plan for long-term ownership, including naming a bird guardian in your will and ensuring you have provisions for the bird's care if your circumstances change.
