Caiques are the clowns of the parrot world — small, stocky, boldly coloured birds with boundless energy and an attitude several sizes larger than their body. If you want a bird that will keep you entertained, a caique might be exactly what you are looking for.
The White-Bellied Caique (Pionites leucogaster) has a white chest, yellow-orange head, and green wings. It is typically the more playful and slightly more cuddly of the two species. The Black-Headed Caique (Pionites melanocephalus) has a black cap, orange cheeks, and a yellow breast. Both species are equally energetic and entertaining; personality differences between individuals often outweigh species differences.
Caiques are extraordinarily active birds. They bounce, wrestle toys, roll on their backs, and invent games with household objects. They tend to be confident and unafraid, which is charming but can also mean they get themselves into trouble by attempting to dominate much larger animals. Caiques are best supervised around other pets, and introductions with dogs or cats should be carefully managed.
Caiques can become nippy if over-stimulated or tired. Learning to read a caique's body language is an important part of ownership.
Caiques are not known as talkers — most learn a handful of words at most. They are far more expressive through behaviour and vocalisation (chirps, whistles, and small shrieks) than through speech.
Caiques can be good with older children who understand how to handle them gently. Their tendency to nip when over-stimulated means young children should always be supervised. Caiques that are handled regularly from a young age tend to be more tolerant.
Caiques can be aggressive towards other birds, including other parrots. Even in a large cage, caiques and other species should be introduced with great care and monitored closely. Many caique owners keep them as solo birds to prevent conflict.
Extremely. Caiques are among the most energetic parrots relative to their size. They require significant daily exercise and enrichment. A bored caique will become destructive and can develop feather-damaging behaviours.
