Choose a Macaw if: visual spectacle is a priority; you want a parrot that maintains some independence; you prefer a bird whose social bonding is deep but not overwhelming. Choose a Cockatoo if: intense physical affection and emotional bonding is what you want; you are home most of the day; you can accommodate the noise and the extraordinary social neediness.
Moluccan and Umbrella Cockatoos are documented at higher sustained decibel levels than most macaw species — making them arguably the loudest of all companion parrots.
Macaws, generally — their social needs, while high, are less extreme than cockatoos. Cockatoos kept without adequate daily interaction develop serious behavioural problems more quickly and severely than most macaw species.
