Macaws are large, active birds that need large, robust cages. Undersized cages are one of the most common welfare problems in macaw keeping. Here is a clear guide to minimum and recommended sizes.
Macaw cage minimums:
| Species | Minimum (W×D×H) | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Blue-and-Yellow / Scarlet / Green-Wing | 120×80×150 cm | 150×90×180 cm |
| Hyacinth Macaw | 150×90×180 cm | 200×100×200 cm |
| Catalina Macaw | 120×80×150 cm | 150×90×180 cm |
Macaws should be able to fully spread both wings simultaneously without touching the cage walls. Many macaw-specific cages available in the UK are borderline on this requirement for the largest species — always measure before buying.
Almost never, provided bar spacing is appropriate (2.5–3.5 cm for large macaws). The larger the cage, the better. If space allows, a purpose-built aviary section is ideal for macaws.
