Hand-Raised vs Parent-Raised Parrots

When buying a parrot, you will often see the term "hand-raised" used by breeders. Understanding what this means — and why it matters — is important for making an informed choice.

What is hand-raising?

Hand-raising means the chicks are removed from the nest at an early age (typically 2–4 weeks, depending on species) and fed by human hands using crop needles or syringes. This is done multiple times daily as chicks require frequent feeding. The chicks grow up associating humans with warmth, food, and safety — the foundational conditions for a tame, trusting companion bird.

At Paraíso de Aves, every bird we sell is hand-raised from the earliest possible age. The chicks are handled daily, exposed to a variety of sounds and human interaction, and given every opportunity to develop the social confidence that makes them outstanding companions.

Parent-raised birds

Parent-raised birds are reared entirely by their parents with no human intervention during the critical early weeks. They can still be tamed later in life, but the process requires significantly more time and patience. Parent-raised birds are generally more suitable for breeding programmes than as companion pets for first-time owners.

The importance of proper weaning

A common problem in the trade is "early weaning" — birds sold before they are fully independent and able to eat on their own. An under-weaned bird may appear to eat normally but become stressed and ill once separated from its hand-feeding source. Always ask your breeder when the bird was fully weaned and whether it is eating independently and consistently before purchase. All birds from Paraíso de Aves are fully weaned before delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hand-raised parrots always tame?

Hand-raised birds that have been properly socialised are far more likely to be tame and human-bonded than parent-raised birds. However, tameness is maintained through ongoing interaction — a hand-raised bird that is neglected for months will become nervous and less tame. Consistent positive interaction throughout the bird's life is essential.

Can parent-raised parrots become pets?

Yes, but it requires significantly more time and skill. Adult wild-caught or parent-raised birds can be tamed through patient, consistent positive reinforcement work, but the process is longer and more challenging than with a hand-raised bird.
