The Green-wing Macaw (Ara chloropterus) is the second-largest macaw species in the world, exceeded in size only by the Hyacinth Macaw. Despite its imposing scale, the Green-wing is famed for its gentle, patient temperament — consistently earning the nickname gentle giant among experienced macaw owners. Its rich crimson body, accented by bands of emerald green across the wings and vivid blue-and-red tail, makes it one of the most visually dramatic parrots in existence.
Unlike the Scarlet Macaw — which it superficially resembles at a distance — the Green-wing displays distinctive red facial feather lines radiating outward from the beak (the Scarlet has bare yellow skin in this region). It is also considerably larger and noticeably calmer in temperament.
Green-wing Macaws are sociable, affectionate, and notably less neurotic than many smaller parrot species. They have a calm, patient quality unusual for large macaws, and hand-raised birds develop exceptional bonds with their human families. They enjoy extended periods of physical contact, respond well to training, and generally handle new people and environments with equanimity.
Their independence is well-developed — they can entertain themselves with toys and chewing enrichment for extended periods — but they still require significant daily interaction. Loneliness or boredom produces the same destructive behaviours seen in all large psittacines.
Green-wing Macaws require a rich, varied diet appropriate for large macaws:
Green-wings have large, powerful beaks that can hull hard-shelled nuts easily. Hard foods provide excellent beak maintenance. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, onion, garlic, and all forms of alcohol.

Both are large red macaws, but they differ significantly. The Green-wing has green wing bands and red facial feather lines, while the Scarlet has yellow wing coverts and bare yellow facial skin. The Green-wing is also considerably larger and notably calmer in temperament.
Excellent pets for experienced owners with the space and time to accommodate a large, active bird. They are gentler and more patient than most large macaws, forming deep bonds with their human families.
60–80 years with proper care. This is one of the most long-lived parrot species — a genuinely lifelong commitment.

A minimum of 150×100×180 cm, with larger being much preferred. They are powerful climbers and chewers — the cage must be constructed from heavy-gauge stainless steel.
Both species are loud by domestic standards. Green-wings may call less frequently during the day, but when they do vocalise, the volume is comparable. Expect large macaw sound levels regardless of species.
