The Green-Wing Macaw (Ara chloropterus) is the second-largest macaw species — a magnificently coloured bird with a reputation as the gentlest and most even-tempered of the large macaws. Often called the "gentle giant," the Green-Wing is an outstanding choice for owners ready for a large bird.
Green-Wings are often confused with Scarlet Macaws from a distance, but up close they are unmistakeable: the rich deep red body is interspersed with a band of green across the wings (giving the species its name), and blue tail feathers. The facial patch is distinctive — bare white skin with tiny red feather lines, unlike the Scarlet Macaw's plain yellow facial patch. Adults reach 90 cm from beak to tail tip and weigh 1.0–1.7 kg.
Green-Wing Macaws are generally calmer and less hyperactive than Blue-and-Yellow or Scarlet Macaws, and significantly less neurotic than many cockatoo species. They form very close bonds with their primary caregivers and are typically gentle when handled consistently and respectfully. They are playful and curious without being destructive in the chaotic way of some macaw species.
That said, they are still large macaws: their beak generates enormous force and their noise level is substantial. These are not birds for small spaces or apartment living.
Green-Wings are generally considered calmer and more gentle, while Blue-and-Yellows are more extroverted and active. Green-Wings are also slightly larger. Both are excellent companion birds; temperament preference is the main deciding factor for most buyers.
The Green-Wing is often recommended as the best starting macaw for owners new to large parrots, given its generally calmer temperament. That said, any large macaw requires significant experience, time, and resources — they are not beginner birds in the broader sense.
