Catalina Macaw Guide

The Catalina Macaw is a first-generation hybrid between a Blue-and-Yellow Macaw and a Scarlet Macaw — one of the most colourful and visually spectacular birds in the parrot world. Each Catalina is unique, combining the colour genetics of both parents in unpredictable, breathtaking ways.

What is a hybrid macaw?

Hybrid macaws are the offspring of two different macaw species. The Catalina (also written Catalína) is produced by crossing a Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) with a Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao). The resulting bird inherits colour traits from both parents, typically producing a bird with an orange-red chest, a blue-green back, and a mix of the two parents' wing colouration. No two Catalinas look exactly alike.

Hybrid macaws are fertile only rarely, and breeding hybrids back to a pure species produces second-generation hybrids with further colour variation.

Temperament and personality

Catalinas typically inherit a blend of their parents' personalities. Blue-and-Yellows are known for being extroverted, playful, and somewhat vocal; Scarlets are more energetic and can be more assertive. Catalinas tend to be vibrant, energetic, and highly social birds that enjoy interaction and stimulation. Like all macaws, they benefit enormously from early socialisation and consistent positive reinforcement handling.

CITES status

Catalina Macaws, as captive-bred hybrids of two CITES-listed species, are themselves subject to CITES documentation requirements. Our Catalinas are sold with full CITES-compliant documentation reflecting their hybrid status and captive-bred origin.
