Large parrots are among the most impressive companion birds in the world — intelligent, long-lived, and capable of profound bonds with their human families. They also require serious space, time, and financial commitment. This guide helps you understand what large parrot ownership really involves.
We breed and hand-raise the following large parrot species, all available for delivery to the UK and Ireland:
Large parrots need large cages. As a minimum guide:
| Species | Min. Cage (W×D×H) | Daily Out-of-Cage |
|---|---|---|
| African Grey | 90×60×120 cm | 3–4 hours |
| Blue-and-Yellow Macaw | 120×80×150 cm | 4+ hours |
| Hyacinth Macaw | 150×90×180 cm | 4+ hours |
| Cockatoo (medium) | 90×60×120 cm | 3–5 hours |
These are minimums. Larger is always better — a macaw in a cage it cannot fully spread its wings in is not a happy bird.
Beyond the purchase price, large parrots carry ongoing costs: premium diet (fresh produce, quality pellets), specialist avian veterinary care, high-quality cages and enrichment, and the hidden cost of household damage from chewing. A macaw with access to furniture will find it within minutes. Budget realistically before committing.
The Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is the largest flying parrot, reaching 100 cm in length and weighing up to 1.7 kg. It is native to central and eastern Brazil and is listed on CITES Appendix I.
Large parrots can be extraordinary companions — highly intelligent, deeply bonded, and capable of rich communication. However, they require very significant time, space, and financial investment. They are not suitable as low-maintenance pets.
