Choosing the Right Parrot for You
The most common mistake new parrot owners make is choosing a species based on appearance or popularity rather than compatibility with their lifestyle. This guide helps you match your household to the right bird.
First questions: honestly assess your situation
- Time available daily: African Greys, cockatoos, and large macaws need 3–4+ hours of interaction. Pionus and Eclectus are more independent. Conures fall in the middle.
- Noise tolerance (and neighbours): Large macaws and Sun Conures are very loud. Pionus parrots, Green-cheeked Conures, and Eclectus are quieter. If you live in a flat or terraced house, this matters enormously.
- Experience level: African Greys, Cockatoos, and Scarlet Macaws are best for experienced owners. Conures, Pionus, and Caiques suit first-time owners willing to learn.
- Children in the house: Blue-and-Yellow Macaws, Galahs, Pionus, and Green-cheeked Conures generally tolerate families well. African Greys and large Cockatoos require more careful management with young children.
- Space: A Hyacinth Macaw needs a room-sized enclosure. A Conure needs a 60×45×90 cm cage minimum. Be honest about what space you can genuinely provide.
- Longevity planning: Can you commit for 40–70 years? Do you have a plan for what happens to the bird if you can no longer care for it?

The importance of meeting the bird before deciding
Photos and descriptions — however accurate — cannot substitute for meeting a parrot in person. Whenever possible, visit the breeder's facility to interact with adult birds of your target species before committing. At Paraíso de Aves, we welcome prospective owners to visit our aviary in Llíria, Valencia.
