Early warning signs of illness

Watch for these signs that warrant immediate veterinary attention:

• Fluffed feathers and lethargy at any point outside normal sleep hours
• Change in droppings — colour, consistency, or volume change (note: normal variation can be diet-related)
• Reduced appetite — any parrot refusing food for more than 24 hours should be seen by a vet
• Laboured breathing, tail bobbing, or open-mouth breathing — emergency symptoms
• Discharge from nostrils or eyes
• Unusual quietness in a normally vocal bird
• Inability to perch normally or falling from perch

Finding an avian vet in the UK

Not all vets are qualified to treat parrots. A general vet may be better than nothing in an emergency, but for routine care you should find a vet with specific avian experience or qualification. The Association of Avian Veterinarians British Chapter (AAV/BC) maintains a list of members. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) lists vets with advanced qualifications in avian medicine.

Establish a relationship with your avian vet before you need them in an emergency. A new-bird health check within 72 hours of bringing a bird home is strongly recommended — it establishes a baseline and catches any issues not apparent on visual inspection.

• Psittacosis (Chlamydiosis) — bacterial infection transmissible to humans; requires treatment with doxycycline
• Aspergillosis — fungal infection of the respiratory tract; often related to poor ventilation or mouldy food
