About the Amazon Parrots

Amazon parrots are among the world's most celebrated companion birds — outgoing, highly vocal, and equipped with a talent for human speech that rivals even the African Grey. Numerous species fall under the Amazona genus, and at Paraíso de Aves we principally breed the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) and the Yellow-naped Amazon (A. auropalliata), both prized for their personalities and talking ability.

Amazon parrots are stocky, medium-large birds predominantly green with vivid flashes of colour depending on species — the Blue-fronted displaying blue and yellow facial markings, the Yellow-naped a bright yellow nape patch. Our Amazons are hand-raised from early life, socialised with multiple human contacts, and delivered with complete CITES documentation.

Personality

Amazon parrots are famously bold, theatrical, and sociable. They enjoy being the centre of attention, often performing vocally for an audience, and have a lively sense of humour. Unlike African Greys, which tend to be more reserved with strangers, Amazons are often immediately friendly and entertaining, which makes them popular at social gatherings.

They can also be opinionated — Amazons express their moods clearly through posture, eye-pinning (rapid dilation and contraction of the pupil), and vocal cues, and experienced owners learn to read these signals. Mature males can display seasonal territorial behaviour, which requires understanding and management.

Talking ability

Amazon parrots are exceptional vocal mimics. Blue-fronted Amazons regularly develop vocabularies of 100–300 words; Yellow-naped Amazons are considered among the finest avian vocalists, capable of singing entire songs in tune and with surprising clarity. Speech training is most effective between 3 months and 2 years of age.

Diet and Nutrition

Amazons are prone to obesity when fed a seed-heavy diet. A healthy Amazon diet is:

Amazons frequently develop atherosclerosis and liver disease on high-fat, seed-heavy diets. A pellet-based diet dramatically reduces these risks. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, onion, and garlic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Amazon parrot is best for talking?

The Yellow-naped Amazon and the Double Yellow-head Amazon are considered the finest talking Amazons. The Blue-fronted Amazon is also an excellent talker with a warm, clear voice. All three species hand-raised from an early age develop impressive vocabularies with consistent interaction.

Are Amazon parrots good for beginners?

They are suitable for owners with some bird experience who have thoroughly researched the species. Their strong personalities and seasonal behaviour shifts require confident, consistent handling. They are less cognitively demanding than African Greys but more emotionally expressive than many other parrots.

How long do Amazon parrots live?

50–70 years in captivity with proper care. Like all large parrots, they are a genuinely lifelong commitment.

Do Amazon parrots need CITES documentation?

Yes — all Amazona species sold commercially require CITES Appendix II documentation. We provide complete paperwork: CITES certificate, veterinary health certificate, and ring ID.

How much does an Amazon parrot cost in the UK?
