About the Caique Parrots

Caique parrots are widely regarded as the most energetic and playful parrots in aviculture. These compact, brightly coloured birds from South America — the Black-headed Caique (Pionites melanocephalus) and the White-bellied Caique (Pionites leucogaster) — pack extraordinary vitality into their small frames, bouncing, hopping, wrestling with toys, and performing acrobatics that endlessly entertain their owners.

At approximately 23 cm and 150 g, the Caique is a small bird with huge personality. They are intensely curious, fearless explorers who investigate every corner of their environment with unflagging enthusiasm. Hand-raised from birth, our Caiques are sociable and comfortable with human handling from their earliest weeks.

Appearance

The Black-headed Caique features a jet-black cap, orange cheeks, green back and wings, and a yellow-orange underpart. The White-bellied Caique replaces the black cap with green and orange, and has a pristine white belly. Both are exceptionally vivid birds — a collection of contrasting blocks of colour that look almost hand-painted.

Personality

If a single word describes the Caique, it is exuberant. They play harder than any other parrot species, frequently wrestling with toys, rolling onto their backs, and initiating contact play with their owners. They are bold and fearless — a Caique will approach a new object or person without hesitation.

They can be assertive and, occasionally, nippy if overstimulated — an important consideration for households with young children. They also have a strong flock mentality and can be kept in same-species pairs, though single birds bond more intensely with their humans.

Diet and Nutrition

Caiques thrive on a varied, fresh-food diet:

Caiques are energetic and benefit from foraging opportunities — hide food in toys, paper bags, and foraging boxes to keep them engaged. Avoid avocado, chocolate, onion, garlic, caffeine, and alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Caiques good first parrots?

They can be suitable for committed first-time owners who have researched the species carefully. They are easier to manage size-wise than large macaws, but their energy levels and occasional assertiveness require confident, consistent handling.

Do Caiques bite?

They can nip when overstimulated or during play, particularly as juveniles. Hand-raised birds socialised from birth are significantly gentler than parent-raised birds. Learning to read body language — puffing up, eye-pinning — helps avoid accidental bites.

Do Caiques talk?

A few individuals learn 10–20 words, but Caiques are not primarily renowned for speech. Their personality, playfulness, and visual appeal are the main attractions.

Can Caiques be kept in pairs?

Yes — same-species pairs can live together harmoniously. Be aware that a bonded pair will typically be less intensely bonded to their human owners than a single bird, which may or may not suit your preferences.

How long do Caiques live?

25–40 years with proper care. Their long lifespan means careful planning for long-term ownership.

Do Caiques need CITES documentation?

Yes — they require CITES Appendix II documentation. We provide complete paperwork with every bird.
