Caiques are energetic, fun birds that many people assume are short-lived. The reality is considerably longer.
Caiques typically live 25–40 years in captivity with proper care. Some individuals have been documented past 50. This is significantly longer than most small dog breeds, and longer than many cat lifespans. A caique is a decades-long commitment.
Caiques are generally considered robust, healthy birds when properly cared for. They are susceptible to feather destructive behaviour if under-stimulated, and to obesity on seed-heavy diets. Annual vet checks are recommended.
